Found Companion Animals

If you find a lost pet, the first step is to check for identification tags.

If there is no identification, you can:

Take the pet to a nearby fire station, local vet clinic or animal shelter to scan for a microchip.  If the pet is microchipped, you can contact the microchip company or local animal control to get the owner's information. They can also check lost pet reports.

  • Post clear photos of the found pet on community websites, social media pages, and neighborhood groups (like Nextdoor) to try to locate the owner.

  • Make "Found Pet" flyers with a description, photo, and your contact information to post around the neighborhood where you found the pet.  For "Found Pet" flyers, in addition to a clear photo and your contact information, these additional details are recommended:

    • Specific location where the pet was found (street address or cross streets)

    • Date and time the pet was found

    • Description of the pet's breed, size, age, color, and any distinguishing markings

    • Whether the pet is wearing a collar, and describe it

    • Note if the pet seems friendly, shy, or has any noticeable temperament traits

    • Mention if you have already checked for a microchip and the result

    • Indicate if you have already reported the found pet to local shelters/authorities

    • Provide instructions on how to claim the pet if the owner is found, such as bringing proof of ownership

    • The more detailed information you can provide, the better the chances of reuniting the pet with its owner. Posting flyers in the immediate vicinity where the pet was found also increases the likelihood of the owner seeing it.

While you look for the owner, provide the pet with food, water, and a safe, secure place to stay temporarily. Do not let the pet roam as it could get lost again or injured. If you cannot locate the owner after a reasonable search, you should take the pet to the local animal control facility or no-kill shelter so they can continue efforts to reunite it with its owner or find it a new home.
